A car widely renowned as the most beautiful of all time is also now officially the most expensive after a model sold for €20 million at an auction, German newspaper Bild reports.
Only 39 models of the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO model were ever built, from 1962 to 1964. It was already considered one of the most valuable cars in the world, previously thought to have been worth approximately €14 million. But with the recent record-breaking sale, it seems the Ferrari 250 GTO is even more valuable than had been thought.

The fall of the hammer that sold the car for a whopping €20 million smashed the world record to bits. The previous holder was a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder which sold for about €7 million in May.

Powered by a three-litre V12 engine, the 302-horsepower Ferrari 250 GTO can reach speeds of 283km per hour.

And just who snapped up the wonderful wheels? An unknown buyer from England…

About Ferrari 250 GTO

Since only 39 250’s were ever built the car is a collector’s ultimate possession. Engineered by specialist Giotto Bizzarrini who was also behind the fascinating Lamborghini V12 engine, Bizzarrini was not only responsible for the chassis, but also for the design, which otherwise would be Pininfarina’s task. He took full responsibility for the car, meticulously sorting out the handling and the aerodynamics making use of Pisa University’s wind tunnel facilities. The apertures and vents on the front are not for show. They help in increasing air-velocity to the engine and aid cooling. Even the cam covers were made of magnesium for the weight reduction purpose. The 250’s styling is talked about even today and so are its interiors. The wooden steering wheel adds a touch of class, but arises curiosity as well!

This car was very very fast. The 250 came in 3-liter and 4-liter variants, and had a top whack of 185 mph, speeds that were considered phenomenal in the 1950’s. The V12 3-liter engine produced 295 bhp and was mounted up front. The GT version of the car spent almost a decade on track dominating races and retired after Ferrari decided to focus on F1.

The Ferrari 599 has gone topless! The Barchetta version of the Prancing Horse’s range-topping Gran Turismo has been spied out testing, and is easily distinguished by its mock hard top, which doesn’t quite match the colour of the main bodywork. The less than snug fit of the rear windows also hints that the roof we see isn’t genuine.

The production top could well be a folding metal item, much like the coupe-cabriolet California due next year. The front engine layout of the 599 would certainly allow space for a trick mechanism at the rear, although the weight could blunt performance.

The car’s predecessor, the 575 Superamerica, enjoyed a 25bhp hike to counter the 60kg weight increase, although it featured a unique rotating glass panel rather than a full length CC option.

It is likely the 599 Barchetta’s engine will remain unchanged, keeping the 6.0-litre 620bhp V12 from the GTB
Fiorano coupe, though the top speed will drop from the GTB’s 205mph.

The open-top could appear at next spring’s Geneva Motor Show, with production to start in the summer. The tin-top costs £197,425, so expect the convertible to reduce your bank balance by around £215,000.

The new 2009 Ferrari California won’t make its world debut until the 2008 Paris Motor Show but it was unveiled to a lucky few last week on Thursday. Ferrari held a star-studded event in Maranello and in Santa Monica, California ahead of the car’s scheduled launch on Oct. 2nd.
The Santa Monica event also featured a charity auction where the first Ferrari California was sold for $520,000. That’s a whole lot of money and double what the expected retail price is going to be for the new Ferrari.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was on hand to except the charity on behalf of After Schools All Stars, a charity which helps under-privileged school children.

Maranello, 18th September 2008 – The world premiere of the new Ferrari California takes place this evening in the build-up to its official unveiling at the Paris Auto Show on October 2nd next.

The premiere will take place contemporaneously in Maranello and Los Angeles while Ferrari enthusiasts will for the first time in the Prancing Horse’s history be able to watch the event live on the www.ferraricalifornia.com website from 22.00 Italian time.

More than 1,000 special guests from all over the world will watch the presentation of the new car inside the new production line building designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize 2008.

In addition to President Luca di Montezemolo, the event will also be attended by the Scuderia Ferrari drivers, Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa.

Michael Schumacher will also be on hand, having been involved since the very earliest stages in the development of the Ferrari California, a hugely innovative car sporting a new front-mid 8-cylinder engine and a retractable folding hard top.

The Ferrari California will also be presented today at Santa Monica Private Airport, just outside Los Angeles during a ceremony attended by a further 1,000 invited guests from all over the American continent.

After Bugatti, Ferrari has fallen victim to the online world and its intricate system of knowledge sharing and leaking, with details released about a new model, which has provided us with some juicy news on the FX70.

If this isn’t a sophisticated attempt at viral marketing, a document leaked from the company reveals some details of the Enzo. Take a deep breath because it goes like this: an alluminium V8 engine, carbon fibre body, twin-clutch, seven-speed shift with gear change time at only 50 milliseconds.

An apparently top secret internal Ferrari memo has just surfaced and reveals that Ferrari is preparing a new supercar code named the FX150. Testing for the car begins October 3rd and it is expected to come out sometime next year. It features a turbocharged, mid-longitudinally mounted V8. The engine is made from aluminum alloy and is estimated to have 794hp and 772nm of torque. This results in a blistering 0-100km/h time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 390km/h (about 240mph). Mated to the engine is a new Formula 1 style 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The chasis is carbon fiber and the car’s weight should be around 1300kg (about 2800lbs). The projected price is 1,250,000 euros. Better start saving now.

Well, what do you know… Ferrari has finally created a new two-wheeler, but it’s not exactly the Ducati-esque superbike we had been hoping for. Still, it’s probably the greenest Ferrari the world will ever see. Designed for little tykes of either gender aged 3-4 years, this not-quite from Maranello Ferrari-branded cycle has dual 12-inch wheels, an aluminum twin-tube chassis running straight from the headtube to the rear dropouts and, um, training wheels. A radial-mounted caliper brake grips firmly at the front while the rear gets a skid-friendly coaster brake. Just in case the bright red paint job didn’t get the message across, a yellow Prancing Horse flag is affixed to the rear, easily adding a few extra horsepower in the process. Get yours now from Toys-R-Us for under 5-large. Too small? No worries, a 16-inch wheel version is available along with a proper 20-incher for those budding pre-teen future Ferrari drivers.

Ferrari announced during the first practice day of this weekend’s Monza GP that Kimi Raikkonen’s contract has been extended by one year. This mean’s he’s locked into service with the scuderia until the end of 2010, which is the same time Felipe Massa’s contract runs out. Terms of the extension weren’t disclosed, but the fact that Ferrari resigned the Iceman means they aren’t nearly as worried about his recent form as the rest of the paddock appears to be. It also means that Fernando Alonso can now decide where he wants to go for at least two years and get the silly season officially over with.
